In this section, our objective is to broaden the understanding of our students in the area of what constitutes worship, and specifically what it means to “worship in spirit and in truth”. While each groups experience and practice of worship will be unique, there are some overall themes that need to be explored as our students (and us) mature in our understanding of, and experience in, worship.
The following introduction can be spoken or revised by the leader to “front-load” the experience for the students.
Consider the following quote: “Worship is the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness; the nourishment of mind with His truth; the purifying of the imagination by His beauty; the opening of the heart to His love; the surrender of will to His purpose – and all of this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable and therefore the chief remedy of that self-centredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” William Temple, 1881-1944
Worship is a critical component of the Christian life. Worship is what we owe to our King…the King of Kings. We pay homage to Him as our Lord, and as our Saviour. We honour Him through our words, and our deeds, and through our praise.
While in the 21st century church, worship has become synonymous with singing, worship is much more than that. This section will focus on both the important aspect of our worship through song, as well as our worship through all of life.
