Assembly 2016 – review

Another Assembly has passed. Over 500 of our family members visited, shared, inspired and challenged each other. By all accounts, it's good to be with family. Dr. Anna Robbins expanded on the theme "Open Doors" (a more thorough summary will be on the CBOQ website). Matt Wilkinson elaborated on the findings from the CB Youth Forum. We had over 30 people hanging out at Chop Steakhouse (even some senior pastors

Pray for Youth

"We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders." (Psalms 78:4 NLT) This is the call for all Christians. And that call begins with prayer. This Sunday, Canadian Baptist churches from sea to sea to sea will join together to pray for the youth who are with—and surround—your faith community.

Transition 101 – review

By |2016-10-31T13:57:13-04:00May 30th, 2016|Alvin Lau|0 Comments

It was certainly an event to remember: the collaboration of Inter-Varsity, Power 2 Change, Ambassadors for Christ and CBOQ Youth, supporting grade 12 students in their transition into post-secondary life. This inaugural event laid the groundwork for a key Hemorrhaging Faith issue. The Hemorrhaging Faith report identified transition points, including those in between life stages, as one area where many people move away from the faith. For the high school

“Only a few weeks left.” Your grade 12 grads are anticipating the end of their high school career. They’re also figuring out what the next chapter of their lives looks like whether they’re going to university or college, or pursuing jobs. How do you help them with this transition? Here are some ways your church can be a support for this crucial life-stage change. Have someone walk with the students

A Culture of Feedback

By |2016-10-31T13:57:13-04:00May 16th, 2016|Alvin Lau|0 Comments

There's that moment when someone asks to meet with you to discuss something about the youth ministry. It can be a chaotic moment when your mind races about what the issue might be. Typically, those moments feel defensive and even personal (when they're usually not meant to be). This is why a culture of feedback is critical. It's establishing a rhythm and an openness to evaluation and revision in a

Building a year-long calendar

Lewis Carroll wrote, “If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there.” In other words, you need to know where you’re heading in order to find the best way to get there. That’s what makes a clear vision and an overall strategy so vital. Having a year-long calendar gives a clearer image of where the ministry is going. Now is a good time to start

Assembly 2016 Learning Session: Intergenerational Ministries

By |2016-04-25T00:15:00-04:00April 25th, 2016|Alvin Lau|0 Comments

Many churches are seeking ways to bridge the generations within them. Some methods work; others don't seem to fit well. We're excited to be hosting one of the learning sessions at Assembly where we'll be exploring intergenerational ministries outside the Sunday service context. The learning session is feature four panelists: Gene Tempelmeyer (lead pastor at Spring Garden Church) Freddy Lam (youth pastor at Markham Chinese Baptist Church) Tanya Yuen (children

Behind the Scenes: an event budget

By |2016-10-31T13:57:14-04:00April 18th, 2016|Alvin Lau|0 Comments

Avalanche and Blizzard are two flagship events at CBOQ Youth. Before we finished the 2016 event, we had already started planning for 2017. Part of that includes how we set our budget. While we won’t get into the dollar figures, there are some key elements to consider in any event budget: Venue: Check with the facility to ensure you understand the costs involved (e.g. space rental, food, insurance, etc.).
