Play in Youth Ministry

The other day, I (Alvin) read an article in New York Magazine called “Meet the Adults Who Love to Color”. The premise of the article was that many adults are re-exploring the art of colouring, and in some ways, re-living moments from their childhood. It got me thinking about youth ministry. Youth ministry can be characterized as chaotic, intensive, deep, social or impulsive. Some envision high-ropes courses, while others think

3-Tier Engagement

Recently Matt, Meghan, and Alvin have been reassessing how we gauge our effectiveness with our CBOQ churches, specifically with youth ministries and their progressions. Through prayer and discussion, we’ve come up with a 3-tier engagement approach that will help us better evaluate our ministry. (Note: The tiers are not indicative of importance; they simply provide us with three different ways to measure engagement.) TIER 1 Every year, we will compile

July 2021: Pastor’s Tip

Tip: Talk with your children and youth leaders about their communication and involvement of parents in a hybrid ministry setup.  As churches continue to further reopen their physical facilities for ministry activities, we hope all realize that the transition to physical reopening does not automatically mean the elimination of an online ministry component. While it may not be the same as what’s been done the last several months, recognizing not

Retreats 2022 – update

AVALANCHE AND BLIZZARD 2022 RETREATS UPDATE Our CBOQ Youth flagship retreats approach their 22nd year. Last year was our first ever fully online retreat experience. We were amazed at how God continues to bring his message of hope through these new channels for us. Many were asking, “What will Avalanche and Blizzard look like this January/February 2022?” Our aim was to host a hybrid retreat experience for both Avalanche and

"Transitions" Blog launch next week

At Assembly 2014, Tanya Yuen and I presented a learning session on "Lost in Transitions", exploring how churches could better support children and youth in various transitions. Since then, we've begun to broaden the ideas shared at that learning session into a new blog site. Starting next Tuesday, we'll be publishing a new blog entry elaborating on the key components from that seminar. You can subscribe today at cboqtransitions.wordpress.com. In

Much has passed … still much more to come

Since January, we’ve experienced an Avalanche, a Blizzard, a Today’s Teens Conference, a compassion experience to the Dominican Republic, a Centre Court and an office move. You would think after all that, we’d take a break. But there’s still a lot more to come in the next three months. Here’s a brief recap of what’s up next: Our redesigned website is launched so we’ll be working to keep that up

Assembly 2016 – review

Another Assembly has passed. Over 500 of our family members visited, shared, inspired and challenged each other. By all accounts, it's good to be with family. Dr. Anna Robbins expanded on the theme "Open Doors" (a more thorough summary will be on the CBOQ website). Matt Wilkinson elaborated on the findings from the CB Youth Forum. We had over 30 people hanging out at Chop Steakhouse (even some senior pastors

Treasuring in the Midst of Busyness

January to March is our high season with five events over 10 weeks. I (Alvin) admit I'm not good at taking a step back to be in the moment with God. Too many times, I'm thinking ahead to what's next. And yet, when I think back to Luke 2, twice the author points out that Mary "treasured" two moments: Jesus' birth along with the jubilant exclamation of the shepherds, and

Celebrating the 25th of Avalanche and Blizzard … and a new chapter in 2026

Hello CBOQ Youth Leaders, “Inspiring – Memorable – Life-Changing – in moving youth one-step closer to Jesus.” These are just some of the words that have described what tens of thousands of Youth have experienced at Avalanche and Blizzard as we have gathered at Muskoka Woods over these last 24 years. 25th Anniversary First, we are preparing for what will be a historic experience for Avalanche
