Although most high school students are getting into some kind of back-to-school rhythm, their year will be unlike any other. And think about how different it will be for those who are graduating in 2021! It’s just as vital as ever for us to come alongside them as they navigate their move from high school to whatever post-secondary chapter they choose.
Our grad mentoring kit is still available as a resource to help guide your conversations with students who will graduate at the end of this year.
Here are a few considerations as you approach this grad year with them:
What will be lost in this grad year? Grad isn’t just about the final commencement or the end-of-the-year prom. There are usually other events and milestones that happen throughout the school year. Also, there will be a lot of “last times” that they may miss out on. (Last dance. Last Terry Fox run. Last Christmas exchange.) Allow space and time for some of those laments and grieving.
On the other hand, what ways can you help create some unique memorable moments for the class of 2021? How can you celebrate those milestones? What alternatives can you offer as memorable “last times”?
Some things won’t change. For example, applications for college and university admissions will continue. (See the latest information at OUAC). If may be helpful for you to help students keep these on their radars as they prepare for the next chapter.
Since March all of our lives have shifted and life will continue to change, especially for 2021 graduates. Their expectations and dreams s may need to be altered in our current reality. Let’s come alongside the class of 2021 to see what God has in store for them … and how we can make it a memorable year!
