Mentoring Grads at Pickering Community Baptist Church

By |2021-05-06T21:08:07-04:00May 6th, 2021|guest post|

Mentoring is a vital part of a young Christian’s faith formation. In the past few years, CBOQ Youth has encouraged churches to support mentors, who walk alongside those about to graduate high school. Pickering Community Baptist Church has been guiding and supporting high school graduates in this way for a few years now.  We asked some of their mentors and recent mentees (Grace Wong, Kiya Fu and Jimmy Chao) to share about their experiences. We hope this will encourage

In the past two weeks we have launched 2 pre-recorded webinars about esports: one for youth leaders and one for parents (both can still be viewed at cboqyouth.ca/esports). Engaging in the digital space is an important topic for both parents and churches as it’s a main form of communication and interaction in our world, especially for young people. Digital space is reality; it’s not virtual or make-believe.  We hope both webinars continue to be helpful resources for churches to use. We encourage

Your Input with Reopening (and Beyond)

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to develop, our churches/youth ministries continue to evaluate and adapt what their physical location reopening and longer-term structure look like. Our intention is to gather both ideas and questions from youth leaders and synthesize it into a PDF document that will be released on June 10. We are asking for 3 questions: What are your short-term plans (i.e. within the next 6 months)? What are

Connecting your high school grads

tip: Find out where your high school grads are going, and connect the ones heading to university with a campus group at t101.ca. If you have high school graduates this spring, encouraging in their next step is vital. For those going to university this September especially if it's away from home, your influence in helping them make that connection to a new faith community is crucial. tip: Register for (and recommend) some Assembly learning breakouts. CBOQ is excited to be hosting its annual Assembly, our "family gathering" of churches. Since this year is happening online, there are some great ways to connect and learn from one another, including through our learning sessions. You can find all the ones offered at baptist.ca/assembly/#assembly-learning-sessions. (The early bird deadline is May 9 with the final day to register on June

April Break in Ontario

Next week, many schools in Ontario begin spring (April, not March) break. Some are asking for ideas on how to best engage their youth. For those in Quebec, what suggestions did you find most helpful? Feel free to share them in the comments below on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram.  Here are some ideas (ensuring to follow all current Public Health guidelines):  Do a physically-distanced porch/driveway visit and drop off a care package Hosting a

Esports in April

We are excited to be launching this esports series next month. We hope it will give a baseline of understanding for our youth leaders and parents as they navigate the relatively new frontier of esports, which is becoming a mainstream entertainment option. It’s not just some people gaming alone on their computers. Esports is both a competitive profession (professional athletes) and a spectator entertainment choice. In 2019, it was a $4.5 billion industry in Canada.   While CBOQ Youth is not intending (at this time) to initiate any

Evaluating Summer Opportunities

It’s been just over a year since the first comprehensive lockdown happened. For many of our senior youth and young adults, this was a curveball like no other. Graduations and milestones changed. Work opportunities were in flux. Some students were helped by programs like CERB (Canada Emergency Response Benefit) and CESB (Canada Emergency Student Benefit), although these programs also may have influenced their expectations of what work-life and remuneration means.  For those in school (whether secondary or post-secondary), the expectations of this summer will need to be
