Legacies in Youth Ministry

Bringing the truth of God to the next generation isn’t unique to our time; it’s been happening for centuries. It’s a biblical mandate, too (cf. Psalm 78:1-8). So who has preceded you? It’s good for you to remember the people you are aware of that God has worked through to influence the upcoming generation. Those who have impacted you personally through mentoring Those who have made intangible (maybe even subtle)

CBOQ Kids hosted the first ever Raptors 905 Faith/Family event last Saturday. Not only did several families get to witness the Raptors 905 clinch the Central Division title and got player autographs, they had a chance to hang out court-side afterwards. Herbie Kuhn, the voice of the Raptors, shared his experiences as the Toronto Raptor's PA announcer and team chaplain. More importantly, he emphasized how Jesus is first in his

THIS WEEK FOR MARCH BREAK... This week thousands of students are off school for March Break, which is  a prime opportunity for learning! Here are some examples of what some students are involved in this week: Compassion Experience, Dominican Republic: We have 23 students and leaders from three churches representing CBOQ Youth and International Teams in Los Alcarizzos. They'll be serving at the Lighthouse Project and the surrounding community. You

Today’s Teens Conference 2017 review

By |2017-02-28T23:16:46-05:00February 28th, 2017|Events|0 Comments

Now's the Time So often, the Christian faith is portrayed as future-oriented. "One day we'll get there." "One day, Jesus will return." All of that is true. But Jesus reminds us not to forsake the present. Last Saturday, over 1400 youth leaders, students and volunteers gathered at the Meeting House to be inspired and challenged. Time and time again, they were reminded to consider what God is doing right now, and

Blizzard 2017 1&2 review

By |2017-02-18T00:02:19-05:00February 18th, 2017|Alvin Lau, Events|0 Comments

After each retreat season, someone inevitably asks me which one was better. After going through 31 separate Blizzard retreats, I've realized that, from a life transformation perspective, each one has its own unique distinctions. For Blizzard 1, Leanne and Dallas Friesen used 4 sign posts to see where Jesus reroutes us: intersection, detour, one way and traffic lights. (For those who attended, see if you can remember what each one

Avalanche 2017 – review

By |2017-02-02T00:23:59-05:00February 2nd, 2017|Alvin Lau, event recap|0 Comments

AVALANCHE 2017 It's been almost 2 weeks since Avalanche finished. But the impact of Avalanche hasn't faded. Over 560 students and leaders gathered at Muskoka Woods, to see how Jesus might intercept their lives. Our speaker Heather Flies challenged students with the gospel in a way that made sense to them. She left them with these five challenges: What distractions need to be removed? Who will you connect with so

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Today, most students head back to school after two weeks away, which means many youth ministries kick into the unofficial second half of the ministry year. At CBOQ Youth, we’re able to enter our high season. We have seven events within 10 weeks that range from Avalanche to Centre Court. We appreciate your prayers as we enter this season. Many of you will be returning to the

By |2016-12-01T14:42:35-05:00December 5th, 2016|Alvin Lau|0 Comments

The Christmas season is usually full of energy (perhaps a feeling of hurriedness). We celebrate the birth of Christ on earth with gusto. But we need to sometimes step back. In Luke 2, there are two instances the Bible tells us where Mary stepped back and “treasured these things in her heart.” Once was after the shepherd’s exclamation (Luke 2:19) and the other happened several years later when Jesus stayed
