Slingshot Exchange review: One Conference 2018

By |2018-05-14T22:21:46-04:00May 14th, 2018|Alvin Lau, event recap|0 Comments

CBOQ and the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada participate in an exchange of young adult teams, learning from each other and celebrating God's work in our regions. This past weekend, Kylie Hurlburt, Meaghan Graham and Mike Andress with Alvin represented CBOQ at CBAC's new multi-denominational adventure "One Conference" in Moncton, NB. The intention of this exchange is to discover the answer to two questions: what is God uniquely doing in

Young Adult Exchanges

Youth ministries are environments where students can mature in their faith. Some students are ready for the next step, but our youth ministry may not have the opportunities they need. Happily, we’re part of God’s greater kingdom and he has more opportunities than we could imagine. A few years ago, CBOQ established an exchange with our friends at CBAC. The intent is to send groups of young adults to the

Next Step 2018-19

This season of ministry is wrapping up with a variety of celebrations. Now’s a great time to start thinking about where God is leading your ministry next season and next year. So what are your next steps? CBOQ Youth is launching our annual Next Steps survey. We hope you’ll take the time (about 10 min) to complete it. The survey provides us with 2 key insights from you: What are

Different Degrees of Compassion Experiences

By |2018-04-20T23:33:24-04:00April 23rd, 2018|Alvin Lau|0 Comments

Compassion means “with suffering” and it reminds us to walk alongside others in their moments. The language of “walking alongside” has impacted the way we do missions--we’re thinking more broadly and of longer-term impact. In the last few years, we've moved from the language of "short term mission trips" to "compassion experiences." For many youth ministries, their venture into compassion experiences is, for the youth and many leaders, a first-time

After the High Season

January to March is always an intense time at CBOQ Youth. We’re part of 7 different events in a 10 week span. Some “random” observations I’ve made during that time. “I am getting older.” Whether I like it or not, I am getting older, which means what used to work for me before may not work the same way now. I need to monitor and adjust myself physically, mentally and

Centre Court 2018 – review

By |2018-03-18T00:38:37-04:00March 19th, 2018|Alvin Lau, event recap|0 Comments

Last Friday was the 18th Centre Court event I've participated in. And boy, was it a crazy game?! Overtime and a nail biter right to the end. (You can see all the highlights at raptors.com.) For me, it wasn't just a nail biter of a game. We were also pressed for time and our program. Because the arena needed to be converted for the Leafs game on the following night,

CE-DR 2018: The pep talk

By |2018-03-08T19:53:31-05:00March 8th, 2018|Alvin Lau, DR 2018|0 Comments

In a few hours, our CE-DR 2018 team will depart for the Dominican Republic where they will join other churches under International Teams (ITeams) to serve the Lighthouse Project. We are grateful for the partnership with ITeams and Lighthouse, and the willingness of this 10-person team to serve and learn with the nationals there. Earlier this evening, I briefly shared four points with them: We call these "compassion experiences" because

CBOQ Sunday coming up March 4

By |2018-02-22T22:51:34-05:00February 24th, 2018|Alvin Lau|0 Comments

This Sunday (March 4) is CBOQ Sunday. This year is special (at least for the Next Gen team) because the focus is the Next Generation. It's our hope that, for part of your Sunday service, you will focus on what we're doing as a family of churches with this upcoming generation. By now, you should have received the latest edition of The Canadian Baptist magazine. In it are several articles

Blizzard 2 2018 – review

By |2018-02-16T10:07:07-05:00February 16th, 2018|Alvin Lau, event recap|0 Comments

We have now hosted 50 Avalanche/Blizzard retreats. Let's call this "The Golden Blizzard". With over 300 students and leaders at Muskoka Woods, many memories and spiritual steps were taken this past weekend. Derek Selinger led students through the understanding of hope, juxtaposing it against despair and understanding why Jesus is the greatest hope. Throughout the weekend, we heard numerous students seriously consider what this means in their lives. Some

Blizzard 1 2018 – review

By |2018-02-05T01:08:48-05:00February 5th, 2018|Alvin Lau, event recap|0 Comments

Blizzard 1 for 2018 was the 49th winter retreat CBOQ Youth has hosted. Our speaker, Matt Adams, brought illusions that blew the mind. (He even performed illusions and hung out with students through the weekend.) More importantly, he drew people to Jesus, sharing how Christ is the greatest hope. Life Support amped up students and leaders in worship, including their rendition (with a lot of crowd participation) of the
